As both a children’s author and an elementary school teacher, I understand your classroom.

What does it take to stand on one of the world’s greatest stages when others have told you that you don’t belong there? This thought-provoking and inspiring presentation invites students to step back into the 1930s and explore the true story of a groundbreaking symphony conductor who challenged the boundaries of her time.
Students will discuss the social and historical forces that shaped this remarkable woman’s journey — and what her story means for us today. Join us for a magical storytime event celebrating music, history, and the power of never giving up! Author and elementary school teacher Elizabeth Duncan visits libraries and bookstores to share her inspiring picture book biography of Antonia Brico who followed her dream all the way to the conductor’s podium — at a time when the world said she couldn’t.
In a presentation that incorporates music, movement, and an activity, the author will read aloud from her book, share fascinating historical details, and invite young listeners into a conversation about courage, kindness, and chasing your dreams.

About the Planning Process
Do you travel? What about virtual visits?
Most in-person visits to classrooms, schools, and libraries will be scheduled in Colorado, but I’d consider traveling farther if requested. I’m also available for virtual visits.
How long is a typical presentation?
Presentations will be tailored to each individual request, with input from the teacher or librarian. Generally, presentations for preschool and primary grades are 30-45 minutes, and for intermediate grades, 45-60 minutes.
What is included in a presentation?
I’ve outlined sample presentations for primary and intermediate classrooms and for libraries, but these are adaptable to your individual needs. Presentations will include reading all or part of Antonia and Her Magic Wand or selections from the Great Lives in Colorado biography series, as well as interactive music, art, and/or writing activities.
